With Brian and Dmitri trapped in a small room behind one of the stone blocks, the rest of the party attempted to figure out how to raise the rest of the stone blocks. Deciding that randomness was as good a system as any, Victor started choosing holes at random. Fortunately, the mechanism in number 6 was faulty because when he tried that one a blade, intended to slicing off his arm, the blade jammed. Continuing the random approach, Victor eventually found the correct handle and raised the block which trapped Brian and Dmitri, determining that handles 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 were the ‘correct’ ones.

With Brian and DMitri freed, the party decided to pay a return visit to the Feather-headed snake (and Yeti skeletons) and headed back through the (blue) portal. After a brief (but somewhat painful) battle with a giant bug-thing (Remorhaz) the party decided not to investigate its cave and pushed on. Reaching the ice castle, the party decided to take a break and rest in the foyer of the castle (reasoning it was warmer their than outside in the wind and safer than in the bug’s cave).

While the party was attempting to rest, the door to the main castle opened up and the feather-headed snake (Frost Naga) was there, surrounded by her retinue of animated yetis. The party explained that they were there to find a way to free her – and negotiated a reward of much of her horde in exchange for doing so. Upon learning that the Naga had been ‘cursed’ (enchanted?) and forced to guard the castle by someone known only as Belzir a couple of centuries before – and that Belzir had made the ceramic disc they had been hauling around – the party decided to try to use the disc to free the Naga.

With the Naga freed, the lower rooms of the castle were empty, so the party claimed their treasure and returned to town (after resetting the stone that had come down to block their exit a(and thus restoring the stone that blocks the portal).

In town, the party learned that someone or something had smashed its way into the Guildhouse and destroyed taken a lantern marked with skulls which had been placed there by Astra. Paying a visit to the Temple, they returned the chalice and (after threatening and harassing the priests) accepted their reward of 50 pp.

Ignorting (or perhaps fleeing) the rumors that a headless figure had been seen stalking the streets at night, the party decided to move on to a more exciting locale and set out on the six day journey to the port city of Bastion.

Four days later, the party noticed some small fires off t the side of the road. Brian snuck out to investigate and discovered a small force (30+) of orcs camped a little ways off the road. The party pushed on towards town – cautiously -and reported their sighting to the guards when they arrived.

Once the party arrived in town, they split up to find separate lodging, with Brian and Dmitri attempting to take their chances with the lonely and desperate women of Bastion, Victor taking lodging at his temple and the rest finding rooms in one of the many inns in town.

The Chaos Halls
Chaos? I'll jump right in!

The party decided to explore the halls a bit further.

The party determined that there were several passages which were blocked by huge stone blocks.

They encountered a small mechanical man who demanded to know why their names weren’t in his ancient and decaying appointment book and insisted that they wait while he left to ask how to deal with the party. The party left the room and continued exploring. When they later saw him in a side passage heading back towards the room, Dmitri and Brian sprinted back to the room while the remainder of the party fought a small group of priests and acoyltes bearing the symbols of the same god as the shrine in the caves of chaos who were following him. Having taken the time to add their own names to a still intact page of the book, Brian and Dmitri convinced him that they belonged there.

They found a large room with Tziphal, Lord of Stone inscribed over the archway. Inside was a Dracolisk statue, surrounded by three lizardmen and seven human statues. As soon as Brain entered the room, the Dracolisk and Lizardman statues became flesh and started to move. When Brian left the room, the Dracolisk and the Lizardmen returned to their places and became stone. The party lassoed a human statue and pulled it from the room; using their Stone-to-flesh elixer (found on the Medusa long ago and since forgotten) they restored him to life and learned that he was a priest and had been involved in a war against ‘the scaled empire’ over 200 years ago. The party pulled the remainder of the humans from the room, and broke the lizarmen statues before moving on.

The party explored a small laboratory, finding a scroll, a potion (which made Apus feel younger when he tasted it), and two magical ceramic disks with AZENTALE inscribed upon them. Speaking the word changed the disks to make them very light and fragile – but nothing appeared to happen when one of them was dropeed and shattered.

The party found a large pool of multicolored swirling water and the inscription (in an unknown language): Do you Dare to Bask in the All-Changing Waters of Chaos. Clearly the answer was yes, as one by one the party took a dip in the pool – all being changed in some way. Will’s familiar and Apus changed gender; Brian’s character gained a small boost in his Constitution; Dmitri became temporarily unlucky (penalty to all saves) while Mike gained insight into his opponents actions (advantage on melee attacks). Will’s character was unaffected (he would have been healed if he had been injured) and Victor gained the ability to cast a Cure Superior Wounds once only.

The party next found a portal with a Green gem over the arch. As they debated what to do, the Gem turned Blue. While the gem was blue, Will’s Owl familiar, Dmitri and Brian stepped through the portal. Will no longer had contact with familiar. The others, deciding caution was called for, left to further explore the halls.

At this point – since the parties are not yet fully aware of what happened – the narrative end.

What is actually known to the characters (as opposed to the players) is this: At the end of the session those who did not go through the portal were heading back to the entrance when suddenly Will regained contact with his Owl. The Owl informed will that she, Dmitri, Brian and someone else were apparently trapped in a thirty by thirty room with no exits.

The Swamp

Not much action, a bit of background.

The party headed further up from beneath the keep, favoring caution over greed and choosing not to wade into the water to look for any treasure the Naga might have left behind. But not before skinning both the giant snake and the naga.

Heading up from the snakes and naga, the party found a giant spider engaged in combat with several small rat-men. Choosing to watch rather than engage, they saw the rat-men drive the spider down a side passage and flee (leaving several of their number behind on the floor of the cavern).

Continuing on, the party encountered several Keep guards who appeared quite surprised to see adventurers emerging from “the keep’s basement”. After waiting while the Captain of the Guard was summoned, the party questioned about how they got down there (“from the temple”) and what they found (“snake men and naga”). The Captain asked specifically about whether they found a tomb and, upon being told that they had found a sarcophagus asked what treasure they found with it, confiscating the large gold coins (which had been on the bodies eyes) when they were revealed.

Above ground, the party told the Curate of the temple (who was surprised to learn of the connection to the Keep) what had happened and arranged to have armor made from the snake skin.

The party returned to their rooms to rest and divide up the loot (33 gp each base, 30 gp if converted to ‘real’ currency).

The next day Astra (Kayla) was gone. Acting on the information Apus was able to give themm, the party headed back out to the Evil Shrine in the temple where they found Astra had returned the items to the altar and was waiting – ready to defend them if necessary.

After knocking Astra unconscious and tying her up, the party used radiant magic to blast the evil relics to bits and took Astra back to town, where she shortly regained her senses.

While waiting for the armor to be ready, the party heard two potentially interesting bits of information:

1) Something was rumored to have emerged from the tunnels beneath the keep and have killed a couple of Keep guards. One of those either dead (or missing – the rumors conflict on this point) was rumored to be the Captain of the guard.

2) The two acolytes who had been with the murdered ‘jovial good priest of Rune, Renaldo’ had both left town.

While they waited for the armor to be ready, the party decided to investigate the home of the murdered priest. They initially found little of interest – until someone noticed that there was an empty chest with a) some flakes of dried paint (light blue) inside and b) a trapdoor hidden beneath it. Heading down into the basement beneath the trapdoor revealed that the basement of the ‘jovial, good priest of Rune’ was an altar to the same evil god worshipped by the red robed priests found in the Caves of Chaos.

Once the snakeskin armor was ready, the party set off following the two acolytes. Their trail led out of town – and into the swamp – and eventually two a large statue of a man battling a giant snake. After figuring out how to open the hidden entrance beneath the statue, the party fought the two acolytes and a half-dozen undead skeletal figures before finding the missing chalice from the temple (in a bag, with it’s magic somehow dampened), a magical buckler and a magical mace (which could fire spikes out of the head) and a secret door in the back of the crypt – which led to an underground complex – complete with waiting room furnished with two couches and a marble table. And a magic mouth spell:

Welcome invited guests to my home, laboratory, and study. Please be patient while one of my acolytes comes to show you to my current location. Along the way you may pass by strange and wondrous oddities so please follow my servants carefully as to not wander off of safe passage. If for some reason you are not an invited guest and have violated my inner sanctum, then turn back now.

Exploring a bit further, the party found a room with three firepits, a magical dagger, and a Gelatinous Cube.

Experience: I haven’t added it up yet…

Loot: Buckler, Mace, Dagger. xx gold, yy silver.

Why does it always have to be snakes?

After sending Timothy for some more rope, the party decided to investigate the caverns deep beneath the keep – hoping to find the Chalice down here somewhere.

Finding a passage leading up from the bottom of the shaft, Astra (Kayla) and Brian scouted ahead of the party. Finding that the passage split, the two decided to explore both directions to see what lay ahead. Astra discovered caverns of mushrooms with several glowing beetles munching upon them; Brian discovered a large chamber whose floor was partially covered with black moss. While Astra and Brian debated how to deal with this room, the remainder of the party came up behind them – at which point Astra and Brian lost their memories of the past 24 hours.

Exploring further revealed that beyond the mossy room were several snake bodied humanoids, including a room with more than a dozen of them chanting in front of a rune covered monolith around which was coiled a giant snake. While fighting the snakemen, a creature with the body of a snake and the head of a woman attacked from behind. After a long battle, the group defeated the snakes.

Beneath The Temple
Ghoulish and Ghastly

The party was asked to help the Chapel solve a mystery. First, a relic (chalice) was stolen from the preparation room, then two bodies disappeared (first that of the cultist prisoner, second that of the priest Renaldo).

After some investigation the party found a trapdoor which they pried open (although there appeared to be a mechanism of some type connected to the altar, they could not determine its purpose).
Beneath the trapdoor were a series of caverns occupied by some ghasts and ghouls. Further exploration revealed the tomb of Shemnoata (a pirate?) and (in another section of the caverns) an ancient treasure chest.
After killing the ghouls and ghasts, the party beheaded the corpse and tossed the head into the shaft, later following it themselves to investigate the depths.

Question: Did you recover the ropes you left behind to help with the return? What did you do with the bodies of the prisoner and/or the cultist? Are you taking all of the loot with you (and is the dwarf just carrying everything because that’s what dwarves are good for – or if not, who has what?)
